After the death of her father at sea, Sara’s mother needs help making money for the family. Eleven-year-old Sara goes to work for the lighthouse keeper on an island, cleaning and cooking and farming. Sara works hard—though she is very excited about her upcoming birthday holiday.
But when the lighthouse keeper has an emergency, Sara’s daydreams of home are put on hold. Can she weather the storm on the island alone?
This story is based on the real experiences of children who worked at lighthouses in the early 1900s.
